Project Details
"Der Spalt" (The Gap) is an innovative mixed reality game created by Schauspiel Essen as part of their Grillo Theater anniversary season. The project transforms the city of Essen into an interactive game space, overlaying an invisible second reality over the urban landscape, similar to games like "Ingress" and "Pokémon Go."
The Concept
The game centers around the "Spezialagentur für Alternierende Territorien" (Special Agency for Alternating Territories), a fictional organization investigating mysterious anomalies in Essen. Players become citizen researchers ("SPALTer*innen") who download a research tool and participate in field investigations throughout the city.
Game Mechanics
- Mobile Research Station: A physical installation that travels to different locations in Essen
- Research Headquarters: A temporary headquarters in Maxstraße 54 where players can participate in empathy simulations
- Field Research: Players investigate the mysterious "Geisterbus" (Ghost Bus) and its passengers from "Essen 2"
- Empathy Simulator: A special research tool that allows players to experience different scenarios
- Data Wall: A physical installation that visualizes research findings from citizen scientists
Technical Implementation
The game combines digital and physical elements:
- Mobile app for research tools and communication
- Physical installations and research stations
- Live events and performances
- Integration with the urban environment of Essen
- Real-time data collection and visualization
